When you support Second Harvest Northland, you ensure families have access to nutritious food through 70 food shelves and hundreds of hunger-relief programs across NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin. As the Northland’s only food bank, we do more than provide food; we help food shelves, meal programs, and tribal organizations expand their capacity so they can provide greater access to nutritious food in your local communities.
One of those partners is Lakes Area Food Shelf, supporting Pequot Lakes and Baxter. “Our partnership with Second Harvest Northland has been amazing,” shares Executive Director Tammy.
With your support, we partnered with Lakes Area to transition the Baxter community from a once-a-month Mobile Food Pantry Program to a market-style food shelf which is open three days a week. In their first month alone, the new location supported more than 2,250 neighbors, four times the number reached during the busiest month of the previous mobile program.
“Pequot Lakes has partnered with Second Harvest for decades, so we’re excited to expand this partnership in Baxter,” Tammy shares. “We have access to milk, eggs, and other fresh foods, and our neighbors are so grateful for the quality and variety of food available.”
Your generosity also helps us leverage fresh, nutritious food from national and regional retailers like Costco, Walmart, Aldi, and Super One Foods. These partners are then able to ensure that neighbors have more of the foods they prefer.
“Many don’t have resources to buy fresh food,” Tammy shares. “To see families leave with a shopping cart piled high with nutritious food is amazing. It’s common for neighbors to have tears in their eyes because of the amount and quality of food we’re able to provide.”
