Giving Back to a Place They Call Home - Second Harvest Northland
Man and woman are posing side by side. The man is wearing a black suit and striped blue tie and the woman is in an all black dress with ruffled sleeves.

Although David and Jill now call New Jersey home, northern Minnesota remains close to their hearts. David grew up in Grand Rapids, and together they’ve maintained strong ties to the area through family memories, time spent at Pokegama Lake, and a deep commitment to helping their neighbors thrive.

“We have been giving to Second Harvest for years and recently increased our support,” shares David. “We recognize the severe food insecurity that exists in Itasca County and surrounding communities and feel compelled to give back.”

While their current community faces challenges, they know more resources are available to help neighbors in need. David and Jill thoughtfully use their charitable dollars and a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) to make the greatest impact.

Their Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a charitable investment account that can be used to support organizations like ours. When you contribute cash, securities, or other assets to a DAF, you’re generally eligible to take an immediate tax deduction. Those funds can then be invested for tax-free growth, and you can recommend grants to any IRS-qualified public charity.

Through their DAF, David and Jill ensure nutritious food for families, children, and seniors across northern Minnesota. Though miles away, they continue to invest in the community that helped shape them, reminding us that no matter where you call home, you can ensure neighbors have the food they need to thrive.
