The Power of Community

Ilka always invites neighbors to join in family meals. “The women of my family taught me that community is everything,” she said. “I am sure that they would be proud of me because I have carried on the tradition of loving people through food.”

Ilka was looking forward to making a big Thanksgiving meal for her daughter and four grandchildren who live with her. “Holidays are important to me because they are all about family and laughter,” she stated.

Although both Ilka and her daughter work, their income isn’t always enough to secure healthy, reliable food for their household. “I can remember wondering where we were going to get a holiday meal,” Ilka recalled.

This year, Ilka visited her local food shelf where the “power of community” provided Ilka and her family with a turkey, macaroni, cornbread, and other traditional fixings enabling Ilka to carry on her tradition – of loving people through food.

Join us in putting the power of community to work this holiday season and make this a Thanksgiving for all.
